Being a make-up artist is all about inspiration and constant learning.
Whether as a professional or an amateur, to become a great make-up
artist, you have to explore, study other make-up artists and experiment
with different styles. If you know you are an excellent wedding make-up,
don’t just stop there; see if you are also good at beauty photography
make-up. Moreover, as a make-up artist, don’t be afraid to be different;
we have artists like Kavengi Kitonga in Kenya to motivate you to try new things.
However, scouring magazines, television or the Internet for ideas
should be a habit, not only to learn new things but also to build upon
your skills. In this series, we have shown you different places to
find insight into the make-up world. However, in this article, we will
introduce you to three television shows that you should check out to
help you grow as an artist.
Face Off is a competition reality show that
explores the world of special-effects make-up artists. It is a great
show that highlights creativity, ability and skill. What makes the show
very informative is that it shows a range of skill sets including
sculpting, casting, prosthetics and so much more.
It is extraordinary to see how talented some make-up artists are. The
contestants on Face Off for example, usually create entrancing work at
the end of each episode. Face Off is a great reminder as to how much
work goes into special effects make-up. The make-up industry in Kenya
isn’t diverse enough when it comes to make-up and with the rising
television industry, special effects make-up should be explored by most
aspiring make-up artists, as it may be the next big thing.
America’s Next Top Model
If you know this show, you might be wondering why I have featured it
here, isn’t it just about models? Yes and no; at its core America’s Next
Top Model is an American reality television series that showcases
different aspiring models as they compete for the title of “America’s
Next Top Model.” However, the reason it is a brilliant show for make-up
artists is simply because it focuses a lot on the face. Throughout the
show, a lot of beauty photography is done, and what you notice is that
ultimately make-up plays a vital role in who wins and loses. The fact
that at the end of each round(episode), each woman shows a picture of
themselves at their best, mostly headshots, is again what makes the show
eye-opening for any make-up artist interested in beauty or fashion.
As a make-up artist, you look for inspiration everywhere and RuPaul’s
Drag race is a great place to learn about the world of drag queens and
make-up. Don’t be scared away by the name, drag queens have some of the
most amazing make-up transformations in the industry. RuPaul’s Drag
Race is an American reality competition television series that features
RuPaul as he searches for America’s next drag superstar. So far the show
has won numerous words, including the 21st Gay & Lesbian Alliance
Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards, it has also been nominated for
a Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Make-up for a Multi-Camera
Series or Special (Non-Prosthetic). So, it is a remarkable gem for a
make-up artist. It can get a bit dramatic, but what beauty reality show
isn’t?
